Alex Churchley Cook

I am an experienced BACP accredited psychotherapist/counsellor and work with individual adults in both short and long term therapy. Based in Godalming, but also able to see you in Farnham or Guildford, I can provide a calm, safe & confidential space in which together we can come to understand your problem and look at ways that your life can move forward. We all have periods of life that are distressing but occasionally these become too much for us to bear alone and sometimes talking to friends and family isn’t appropriate or enough. This is when therapy can be so useful as it provides an opportunity to explore what troubles you, be it a major life trauma such as bereavement, long term problem such as addiction or an eating disorder or something you can’t quite put a finger on – a nagging feeling that something just isn’t right. Whatever it is, if it is affecting the quality of your life and undermining your hopes and aspirations then taking time for yourself to come to understand these concerns is one of the most important decisions you can make.

I have extensive (over 20 years) experience of working with and around addiction. This includes alcoholism, drug addiction and gambling addiction as well as other obsessive-compulsive behaviours (shopping, food, sex etc.) that deeply damage the quality of life, both of the sufferer and of their families and friends.

Life transitions such as going to university, leaving, divorce, retirement etc.

Depression & Anxiety

Eating disorders and relationship to food, body or both. Body Dysmorphia.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Loss, grieving and mourning

Feelings of low self-esteem/low self-worth, self-hatred.

Loss of identity – i.e. losing your job and realising that you don’t know who you are without it or finding the same after losing a significant other.

Psychodynamic/Attachment – Long term

Psychodynamic/Attachment/CBT– Short Term

Whilst primarily trained in psychodynamic techniques my approach is largely defined by you and what you need from therapy. The initial consultation will be an opportunity for you to tell me what brings you here and for me to explain a little about myself and how we might work together so that we can see if we feel that we can work together. At the end of that session, we will agree on a way to move forward which might be with me or possibly with someone else whom I feel is more suited to your needs.

Postgraduate Diploma in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (WPF Therapy, and University of Roehampton)

I am a member of the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (MBACP) and as such adhere strictly to their ethical guidelines.
