Dr Emma Cosham

CPsychol, AFBPSS, PsychD, Clinical Psychologist

Hello and thank you for having a look at my profile.

I am a Chartered Clinical Psychologist, registered with both the Health and Care Professions Council and British Psychological Society. I have been in private practice since 2016 and have chosen to focus on this exclusively since I left the NHS in 2021. During the 12 years I spent working in the NHS, I worked across a number of adult mental health services, including specialist eating disorder, personality disorder and trauma-focussed services. As well as psychological trauma, I have particular expertise in appearance-related concerns and have worked alongside cosmetic and plastic surgeons to support individuals considering surgical interventions.

You might be reading this because you are struggling with something in your life at the moment. This might be:
-feeling disconnected from other people and from what you usually enjoy in life
-struggling to come to terms with a difficult life event
-eating less or eating more, perhaps with less confidence in your body shape or appearance
-struggling with the desire to achieve things perfectly or to a very high standard
-feeling negative about yourself and the future
-worrying more than usual or feeling anxious at times you didn’t previously
-using other strategies to manage, such as drinking alcohol, using substances or self-harming

Meeting with a Clinical Psychologist can help to make sense of how and why this has happened and find a way forward. I draw on my knowledge and skills from different psychological therapies in an integrative way to ensure I tailor sessions to suit your aims and needs. The approaches I use are all well researched and evidenced to support their use for a range of psychological difficulties.

Experience

I am an EMDR Europe Accredited Practitioner and regularly use EMDR to effectively treat PTSD and other trauma and anxiety-related concerns. I have developed broad expertise in delivering both first-line psychological therapies, recommended for many difficulties, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and also the newer approaches known as “third wave” CBT. This includes the models of mindfulness-based psychological therapies, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT). More detail about these approaches can be found on my website.

Throughout my career, I have also specialised in the psychology of eating disorders. I have worked in community and inpatient services to help set up and develop safe and effective ways of supporting people with eating distress. Early help and support for people who become concerned with controlling what they eat and how they look is essential to prevent more serious disorders developing. Please contact me if you have concerns about your relationship with eating or read more on my website here.
