Greg Conn

I believe in society today we struggle to communicate our true feelings, and talk about what is really happening for us. I am here to listen and help you make sense of your struggles.  I believe that people typically have the capacity to be resilient, and the spirit of my work is using our therapeutic relationship to work collaboratively.  I can help to elicit your own motivation to change so that you can live your life to the full.

I am a therapist qualified in both generic counselling and addictions counselling, I am a member of the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) and abide by its ethical framework and code of conduct.  I also have up to date training that complies with standards set by FDAP (Federation of drug and alcohol professionals). I am a qualified SMART facilitator. SMART is a science-based programme used to help people manage their recovery from any type of addictive behaviour. This includes substances such as alcohol, nicotine or drugs, or compulsive behaviours such as gambling, sex, eating, shopping, Internet use or self-harm. SMART stands for ‘Self Management And Recovery Training’.

Experience

I have experience in, and offer both long-term and time limited counselling, and have worked in the NHS, charity organisations, residential, out-patient and private settings.  I work with individuals, groups and couples at various life stages.

My experience as a counsellor has stemmed from working in a residential rehabilitation centre in Southampton, a counselling service based in Surrey, and working as a Substance Misuse Specialist in the NHS.  I specialise in working with clients who are struggling with any form of addiction.  I also work with partners; family members and friends who may be affected by addition either jointly with their loved ones or in separate therapy sessions. I am experienced in individual, couples and group work

Approach

I work collaboratively with clients to identify their needs and work at their own pace.  I am trained in and use skills from a number of therapeutic models including; Person/ Client centered counselling, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Interpersonal group therapy, relapse prevention, harm reduction and 12-step facilitation.

I specialise in any form of problem substance or compulsive behaviour, and work to what the client identifies as their aims.  I understand that some traditional approaches to addiction can be off putting (such as attending groups like AA, NA etc)– and where they work for some people, they do not for others.  I therefore work from a number of approaches, and have confidence that both control and abstinence are achievable for clients if they can learn the correct skills.
