Lynne Hipkin

BSc, MSc CPsychol (Chartered Clinical Psychologist)

I work with young people aged 7 years and upwards via face to face appointments at Guildford Eaves on a Tuesday or Thursday afternoon.

I am an HCPC registered Practitioner Psychologist working with children, young people and their families. My experience and training allow me to connect quickly with you and your child, and offer effective therapeutic strategies. I have a special interest in anxiety problems, family transitions and relationships, trauma, emotion regulation and helping children to manage troublesome behaviours. I consult with parents to discuss worries and offer advice, and I work directly with children to explore and resolve emotional, behavioural and social difficulties. I can also liaise with schools to ensure everyone is thinking about the child’s needs.

I also work with young adults in their 20’s who may be struggling with anxiety and/or have experienced childhood trauma, relationship difficulties and life challenges.

I am informed by CBT, Narrative, Solution-Focused and psychotherapeutic approaches, and I tailor assessment and therapy to meet each child’s unique needs. I will provide a brief summary and therapy plan following assessment, and communicate regularly with parents of younger children. It is important that teenagers can own their therapy, so consent and confidentiality are paramount, whoever may be paying for sessions. Be assured that any concerns about safety will be shared with parents where appropriate and in negotiation with the young person. Sometimes parents are invited to be involved with therapeutic approaches, and this is often the case with treatment for anxiety and OCD in school age children. I offer both short (6-12 sessions) and longer-term therapy.

Everyone’s story is different and a big part of my work is listening and being curious about yours. If I can understand a little about how a young person sees and experiences their world, I can often suggest what might be helpful to them – either in terms of what they can learn to do, or how the adults around them could respond differently to support them.

I offer clinical supervision for psychologists, counsellors and a range of professionals who work with children. Please contact me to discuss your needs. Both ad hoc and regular supervision available.

Experience

I have been qualified for 30 years. Having worked in NHS CAMHS and community settings, as well as consulting to therapeutic fostering and residential care services, I went on to develop a thriving private clinical practice in Claygate, which has now relocated to The Eaves in Guildford. I currently also work closely with two charities supporting vulnerable young people who have experienced childhood trauma.

I have provided supervision and training for clinical psychologists and other professionals for many years, and run reflective practice supervision groups for residential staff. For 8 years I was an associate with a national organisation providing training and practical information about attachment relationships, trauma and resilience for those involved in frontline services for vulnerable families. I also write for media publications and present at conferences and other events.

I engage in regular continuing professional development and clinical supervision to enhance my practice and keep up-to-date. I work to professional and ethical guidelines provided by the British Psychological Society and the Health & Care Professions Council.
