Rachel Gray

Hi my name is Rachel. I am a cognitive behavioural psychotherapist fully accredited with the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Therapists (BABCP).

If you choose to engage in cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) with me my aim would be to work with you to develop a clear understanding of your difficulties, of how they impact on you day to day, how they have developed and what is maintaining them. I would then support and guide you to develop skills to enable you to make changes that will have a positive impact on you, the way you feel and your life.

Experience

I have worked in the NHS in mental health care with adults for almost 20 years in a variety of different settings. I began my career as a mental health nurse in 1998 before training and qualifying as a cognitive behavioural psychotherapist in 2008.

I decided to move from nursing to cognitive behavioural psychotherapy as I felt I might be able to teach / guide individuals to develop their own skills and tools to manage their difficulties more effectively. I continue to practice as a cognitive behavioural psychotherapist within the NHS while also developing my private practice.

Approach

I am passionate about CBT, especially the way it involves working alongside an individual to develop a ‘tentative explanation’ about their particular difficulties. I am a great advocate for learning from experience and CBT encourages this discovery. The therapist supports and encourages the individual to investigate or test their ‘explanation’ using a variety of techniques to develop new, more helpful beliefs / insights.

I also have experience of working with individuals using Mindfulness techniques and Compassion based approaches to particular difficulties.

I have experience working with depression and anxiety disorders such as: obsessive compulsive disorder, panic, specific phobias, social anxiety, health anxiety and generalised anxiety. I also have experience of working with post-traumatic stress disorder, childhood sexual abuse, body dysmorphia, chronic fatigue syndrome and trichotillomania.
